PNHS Dedicated First Ever ADA Accessible Home
On March 17, 2009, dozens of people gathered to congratulate Tracy Martin on her new ADA (handicap accessible) home. What used to be an empty lot on East Maple Street, which many considered an eye sore, is now a gorgeous 1,100 square feet home that was made for her. She was picked to receive this house through an affirmative marketing (application) process.
Mark Dahlquist, Executive Director of PNHS said, "There are a lot of other houses in the community that have been retrofitted with wooden ramps and accessories added on. Simple things, however, like widths of doorways and the height of countertops are usually never factored in. This house, however, was built from the ground up with Tracy in mind.
Tracy is a C-4 incomplete quadriplegic. That means she has very limited use of her arms and legs. She uses a wheelchair to get around, and until now life was a little more difficult, but this new house will change everything.
Tracy Martin said, "It will help me to strive to be even better because all the care and kindness that went into this house. I am really part of the community, not just something that has been pushed to the side."
Everything about this house was built with Tracy in mind, like the shower. It was designed to be large enough for her to get in and out of with her wheelchair.
Pocatello Neighborhood Housing Services was the main force behind this construction, but local companies donated a lot of their time to help out. Tracy was given the opportunity to help with the design. She got to pick out all of the light fixtures, as well as the paint.
"She is a good productive member of the community. I can't think of a better person to get this home than Tracy Martin," indicated Mark Dahlquist.
The home blends very nicely into an existing neighborhood and special attention is being paid to create attractive, low maintenance, and low water landscaping. With the help of volunteers from Idaho Central Credit Union, the new landscaping will become a reality in mid-June, which will be the final touch in this worthwhile endeavor.
