Plant a Seed of Change and Grow a Better Neighborhood

NeighborWorks® Community Leadership Institute is a regional training conference that aims to strengthen the voices and skills of residents from neighborhoods and communities served by NeighborWorks® organizations such as Pocatello Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc.

This last year PNHS sent a group of residents from Pocatello to Houston to train in community issues. The Community Leadership Institute participants created an action plan so they can effectively bring the knowledge they gained at the CLI back to their communities and use it to effect sustainable positive change. This year the group decided that the project would b a Mural and they would involve the community and youth in an effort to revitalize and increase beauty in an area of need within the community.

Why a Mural Project?

  • A Mural Project beautifies the city- benefits everyone
  • Diversification of attractions- residents gain more pride in city, people who visit Pocatello are more likely to return
  • Integration and investment in community- by involving various groups and individuals, especially the youth, they will feel invested in the community which will increase their contributions to Pocatello in other areas as well
  • Research has shown that areas with murals are less likely to be vandalized

Theme:

An artistic representation of the organization/ population the artists represent.

Mural will emphasize:

§         Community

§         Diversity

§         History and future of Pocatello

Mural Location:

Mural locations are in the entrances of the Center Street Underpass on both North and South side. Please note that that the first spaces, even though smaller, have a trapezoidal shape, which makes them more visible to get a copy of sizes call Anita at PNHS 232-9468.

How to accomplish an effective mural:

Use of lettering is strongly discouraged as it is distracting for drivers and also depletes from graphics. Simple graphic images are most effective, using clean, crisp edges. Shadowing and blending are not practical.

Process:

Draw the design on reduced grid to the size of the space desired. Continue the breakdown to grid size process until you have a design that will be easily transferred to the mural surface space. Grid lines will be drawn on the space, and then the design transferred to the surface. This can enable more than one person at a time to work on the mural and will assure a true reproduction. Murals will be painted by the submitters. The paint and equipment will be supplied by the project organizers.

Deadline: Proposed mural designs must be submitted to:
